It is no surprise that Raleigh, located in the heart of North Carolina, regularly turns up on the “best places to live” lists. Downtown Raleigh is in the midst of a renaissance, with new businesses, renovations and attractions planned, including a convention center scheduled for opening in the summer of 2008. Fayetteville Street, known as North Carolina’s “Main Street”, reopened last year with unique restaurants and imposing skyscrapers mixed with restored historic buildings. One popular attraction is the North Carolina State Capitol, a National Historic Landmark. Throughout downtown and surrounding areas, you are certain to find cuisine for upscale fine dining to traditional southern cooking. |

As the capital of North Carolina, Raleigh is the seat of state government and a center for international business and higher education. Raleigh is home to seven colleges and universities, along with neighboring institutions such as UNC Chapel Hill and Duke University. |
The Miami Herald has stated:
"Raleigh has morphed from a friendly-but-sleepy college-government town into a high-tech center where the largest employers include IBM, SAS software and Cisco systems. Still some of Raleigh's finest attributes remain: The sheltering green of oaks and pines, iced tea served sweet, friendly locals with deceptively slow Southern accents masking Ph.D-quick minds."
Located in Raleigh are the Raleigh-Durham International Airport and a portion of internationally renowned Research Triangle Park. Raleigh is easily accessed by Interstate 40 and four major U.S. Highways, with I-85 and I-95 passing nearby. Lake Crabtree is located between the RDU airport and downtown Raleigh. This 520-acre lake and park offers hiking, cycling and nature trails, boat rentals and picnic facilities. Also nearby is the William B. Umstead State Park, over 5500 acres of natural community, tucked between Raleigh, Durham and the Research Triangle Park, and accessible from the interstates. Picnicking among the pine trees, walking through the woods, fishing and horseback riding are some of the activities in this natural wilderness. |

Although the area is known for its college basketball rivalries, three professional sports teams call Greater Raleigh home: Carolina Hurricanes (NHL hockey), Carolina Mudcats (AA baseball), Carolina RailHawks (USL soccer). Beautiful tennis and golf resorts surround the greater Raleigh area, including Pinehurst, the site of more golf championships than anywhere else in the country.

As the capital city, Raleigh is home to three state museums of art, history and natural sciences. All offer free admission. Another attraction nearby to the downtown area is the state Farmers Market which is considered one of the best and most modern markets in the country. Guests enjoy acres of indoor and outdoor specialty shops, fruits, vegetables and gift products from across North Carolina.
Raleigh is a big city with a small town feel, coupled with a dose of southern hospitality! |
