3-D Endodontics: The Final Frontier?

Endodontic treatment, retreatment and surgical intervention have become quite routine and successful over the years due to the invention of the surgical operation microscope and nickel titanium rotary instruments. However, there is still a gap in only treating what one can see. Even with digital radiography, 2 dimensional images of 3 dimensional objects can only provide a basic guesstimate for the dental practioner. Cone Beam Computer Tomography (CBCT) has been available to the dental clinician for the past 5-6 years. With the use of these 3 dimensional scanners a more detailed analysis can be performed and thus a new dawning of diagnosis and treatment has evolved. 2 D imaging still plays an important role in our dental practices, however; the 3-D views provided by CBCT technology brings unmatched depths of diagnosis and treatment for all our patients. Therefore, this course will deal with the detailed analysis of CBCT use for diagnosis, viewing canal anatomy, location of resorption and perforation defects, dealing with retreatment considerations, as well as fractures that are evident in our 3-d treatment of all our patients.
